About Vera

During my 30 plus years on the Vineyard, I have worked in Edgartown town government, retail management (the old Edgartown Market, where the movie theatre is now), and the hospitality industry.  My husband and I bought Among the Flowers in Edgartown in 1977 and then moved into the fine dining world when we started Andrea's Restaurant, named after our daughter, on Main Street in Edgartown in 1981.  It was formerly known as Louise Tate King (author of The Martha's Vineyard Cookbook), and is now Atria atriamv.com.  I am delighted to see the business we started and worked for 20 years be taken on by a new generation of sucessful professional restauranteurs.  Greer and Christian Thornton (no relation) have done a fabulous job and I am extremely proud of the way they have grown the business, and all the well deserved accolades they receive.  That spot will always have a special place in my heart, as I raised my two children in the house we built behind the restaurant.

At the same time we had Andrea's, I had my own wedding consulting business, when the concept of destination weddings was new, and the Vineyard was obviously a great choice of venue.  After selling Andrea's in 1981, I went completely rogue and got a waitress job at Dock Street Coffee Shop at the end of Main Street-an 18 seat greasy spoon diner with the best hangover curing breakfasts on the island. I met some wonderful islanders and some real characters there, and I will never forget the experience of being on the job at 6:00 am and seeing the sun rise over the harbor.

Then back up Main Street, doing a complete 180, I worked at the Hob Knob Inn, thanks to Jamie Hamlin, vhamlincatering.com caterer to the stars, who suggested the job to me.  I met more wonderful people, this time visitors, and put my extensive island knowledge to good use helping guests and answering questions.  But I found I could only bake so many chocolate chip cookies and in 2003 I got my real estate license and moved over to the newly formed Hob Knob Realty.  In 2009, I became a broker and left Hob Knob after 14 years to start my own company, Vera Thornton MV.  Since then, I have brokered over $12 million in Vineyard real estate sales in Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Chappaquiddick and Chilmark.

I specialize in luxury properties and work in both sales and rentals. I have a wide network of island friends and contacts, and many loyal clients. Much of my business is referral-based, I am proud to say. I find a great deal of satisfaction in helping people find the right property for their needs, whether it be the purchase of an island home – for both locals, off-islanders, and investors – or the right vacation rental.

“I love this magical island, with its strong sense of community, so much natural beauty and diversity of culture.”

I pride myself on my ethics, professionalism, and dedication to my clients. I will always go that extra step to provide trustworthy, informed customer service, and look forward to new and exciting times ahead!

But my greatest joy, I must say, is my four grandchildren: Summer, Hudson, Ruby, and Violet, all of whom live on the Vineyard with their parents. My daughter is an auto mechanic and runs McIntosh Motors, and my son Matt is a gifted stone mason and owns Premier Land and Stone.  I am truly blessed.
